Who can request a title search?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Idaho

Asked local title insurance company to purchase a title search for my property going back 4 or 5 owners.

They refused my request and said only a lawyer can ask for that.

How can that be?

there is nothing preventing them from doing it. Maybe it is a policy of their company. Title searches are done all the time for a variety of reasons, many times without a lawyer being involved in the activity at all.

ask a different title company.


on top of that, all the records searched are public records so technically you could do the search if you wanted to.

I think they may be trying to hide something hence the "you need an attorney to ask for that." Will try at a different title company but fear the same thing may happen there. (Small town.)

The public records you wrote about are at the county, yes? A friend tried that route but was not very successful; too many books with too many names I guess (even though he has the filing numbers.) Thought it would be easier to just buy the data.

It isn't as simple as it sounds. I was mentioning the you could do it simply due to the fact the records are public records that anybody can access so theoretically anybody could do a search. It then becomes how accurate it is which is why the trained people get paid to do it.


I don't know what a title company would be hiding, after all, title searches is what they do. It doesn't make sense to turn you down.

the records are not always at the county recorders office but the germane deeds would be located there. There care other records that might come into play that may not be available at the county recorders office.
