Well, it would make sense for them to..um.. look at the plates on the car to see if they match the sticker.
And then what? The sticker is what is looked at. Sometimes the plates won't be looked at. If the plates ARE looked at and are a mismatch then that is yet ANOTHER parking ticket your girlfriend will receive. Again, when there is a mismatch the sticker prevails.

I can't speak specifically to New York, but when I sold a car in Mass, I didn't remove the inspection sticker because it was the responsibility of the new owner to get it inspected prior to registration. Granted the registration information wasn't on there, but I don't know that it would be intuitive to expect someone to think to remove stickers from the windshield. The ordinary person would think plates only in states where plates go with owners rather than cars.
Inspections make no difference. If you leave an inspection sticker on the car when sold the seller can't be hurt. The worst case is that you give the buyer a chance to scam and get extra time to get their inspection done.

Anyone who owns a car in New York should know that all of the information about their car is on the registration sticker. It >should< be common sense to remove it when disposing of the vehicle. I believe there is a reminder about this on the registration receipt or on the sticker.

Regardless, the damage has been done.

Yes she cancelled the EZPass after she saw the replenishment charges on her credit card and yes, it's clear on the EZPass site that the account holder is responsible for charges incurred prior to the date that the EZPass was reported lost or stolen.

Well it's too late for her to go to a hearing on the tickets already pleaded, but she's surely going to get more. So maybe we'll look into doing that. From what we were told, the car will be impounded at some point.

Yes of course.

Locate the car and retrieve the registration sticker.

Locate the car and retrieve the registration sticker.
We tried that. Drove into NYC in the middle of the night and drove up and down the block where the tickets were issued, couldn't find the car. Probably just as well, breaking into the car could have caused more problems than it solved.

We're going with the advice given earlier on this thread, when she receives another ticket we'll go to a walk in hearing and see if we can get this straightened out.
