The issue is NYU tripped themselves up, by saying the rooms are incorrect. If that was the fact then the alcohol has been stored directly in my daughters room the whole time and the shared space if it was legally reported my daughter wouldve been in full posession of it. All they want to honestly get is the alcohol taken care of and not to be moved 3 weeks into classes now almost as its 3 of them having to swap rooms in the suite rather than the one. And NYU isnt following their policy regarding the subject yet is still holding the improper room violation againdt my daughter and her roommate if they dont swap, but this still leaves the schools disregard for the alcohol policy and the upperclassmen in violation this whole time

Aw, geez. Just have your daughter move into a different room. This is not the big deal you are making it out to be.

I think you would be smart to quit calling the university on a daily basis. Let your daughter concentrate on her studies and let the university do its job of educating her.

Good luck.

Good advice. Adults should not have mommy calling the Dean. :(

I'm going to be very blunt here.

If you take legal action against the school to force them to move the other girl instead of your daughter and her friends, you will lose.

While I think the OP is being foolish, NYU's residential alcohol policy forbids underage residents to be "in the presence" of alcohol in their rooms. Ergo vodka in the freezer in the dorm is a no-no. So NYU does have a problem with this housing.

I don't disagree with that at all, and I think everyone (including NYU) has recognized that having alcohol stored in a room with minors is a problem.

It appears that NYU has been trying to remedy the problem by having students switch rooms. This is a sensible solution and it should have been a relatively simple solution. But it also appears that NYU has been facing some opposition to the room-change by a parent (or parents) because the parent (or parents) do not like who it is the university is telling to move.

I cannot imagine, of course, that the university has any other pressing problems to deal with the first few weeks of school than a wrong room assignment. I just hope the students involved can handle life's other problems better than they have this one. ;)

Never said there wasn't a problem. But that doesn't mean the OP has a lawsuit. The university appears to be attempting to solve the problem - the fact that they're not solving it the way OP wants them to doesn't mean she has standing to sue.

Additionally, what proof does HP (helicopter parent) have that the alcohol was simply moved to the freezer? Heck, 3 weeks into the school year it's probably nothing but an empty in the bottom of the recycling bin

I can only imagine the earful I would get if I were this involved with my daughter's college experience. Heck, she gets on me if I message her coach to discuss Senior Day! By 19, one should be able to handle issues like this, w/o Mommy/Daddy calling the big, bad school. Seriously. Did you decorated her room for her, too? (*)

(*) I actually know parents who did this. Put fairy stickers all over their daughter's dorm room. And frilly pink curtains. It did not go over well.

Time to cut the apron strings. If she's big enough to live in the City, she needs to learn to handle her own affairs.
