No idea what happened

Long story short. In middle of divorce uncooperative ex. Court ordered we are responsible for debts in our name (except a couple very specific things) A couple months before seperation my ex borrowed $10,000 from my mother without my knowledge until after and signed an "I owe you" with her only and with payment schedule included. Has failed to pay back one penny. What is the most cost effective way for my mother to collect this debt? What are the limits in small claims court in rhode island? (I have gotten a few different answers) any and all help would be appreciated in this.. Thank you.

Small Claims max in RI is $2,500

Your mom will need to sue him.

I have seen $2500. But also seen the $5000-$10,000 mentioned as far as the lower level of courts. So would my mother have to hire a lawyer and go to district court? And would this be something most lawyers will shy away from? (Family, ex family, divorce in process, etc)
