I will be 18 in 5 months. I have been living with my father and step mother. They are splitting up and my dad wants to move 2 hours away and change schools when I'm about to graduate. He will not let me live with her, yet she's been my mother for 2 years since mine passed 5 years ago. My question is, am I allowed to stay here against his will? What can he do if I don't go with him, since I'm so close to being an adult? I live in Washington.

He can, theoretically, make life difficult for your stepmother if she won't return you to him against his wishes. I know it sounds horribly unfair (and frankly I believe forcing you to switch schools at this point in your life is a pretty rotten thing to do - is it even possible?), but he does have sole rights to you.

Is there someone else that you could stay with while finishing school, other than your stepmother? Right now your father is dealing with a lot of stress and if its really important to you to graduate with your class then you need to convince your father to allow you to stay.
