What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA
I've just received a request from a debt collection agency regarding a DirecTV debt. Firstly when we connected to DirecTV we were told we had to pay $300 up front, which we were told we would get back, but we disconnected early and the termination fee was $300, we were again told the $300 we paid first would cover this, but we are still getting an account for this. We now live overseas. Also we posted their equipment back, and have a receipt for it, but they say they didn't receive it and so are still getting charged for that! What can I do as we are getting best collection letters. Thanks

As far as the two $300 issues: read your contract

To the eauipment: did you provide a copy of the receipt they signed or proof from the delivery service of them receiving it?

Being in another country doing anything is complicated. Are you ever coming back to the states?

We did not receive a contract and we have NO intention of ever coming back to the states.

Here is a really good article on foreign service of a lawsuit. . . (copy and paste if you have to)

Having had experience with dealing with such service, I can tell you that it is highly unlikely that you will be facing proper service of a lawsuit. Service under the Hague Convention is a pain in the ___ and certainly not worth the expense unless the potential recovery will justify it.

edt: For some reason copy & paste does not work. Google "service of lawsuit under Hague Convention" then find the link that states: "Serving Process outside the US - Proskauer Rose LLP"
