What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Hi everyone..
Back 6 months ago I filed a PPO on my boyfriend for domestic abuse which is the father of my son. The judge granted me temporary custody and put PPO in place. we have a court date coming up soon for child support. what exactly happens in these hearings? he keeps saying to everyone he wants joint custody so he does not have to pay support. He has signed off a child in the past before me and has been in trouble with the law several times for different reasons. He has no license, car and does not have a home of his own what are his chances of getting any kind of custody other than the supervised visits I give him now.

It might remain supervised in the short term, but eventually he's very likely to get the usual unsupervised visitation including overnights, weekends and whole weeks.

You haven't told us your state so there's not much else we can help you with.

Would we be correct in assuming that the boyfriend with the PPO against him (not ex yet?) is the same person in your life with a suspended MI license that is going around with a FL license and plates?

Would we be further correct in assuming that you want to introduce this somehow, in an effort to decrease Dad's time with the kid?

To answer your less round about question: Yes, Dad could get joint custody. No, joint *legal* custody does not mean he won't have to pay child support. Yes, judge's are used to people asking for *physical* custody (sole or joint) as a way to get out of paying child support.

You cannot use his past against him - because you chose to be with him in spite of it.

While I agree...the level of domestic abuse after the child was born would factor in to one extent or another. It might factor in only mildly in some instances and majorly in others.

I know we say that an awful lot here, but it's not necessarily true. If the parent has a bit of a "Come to Jesus" with him/herself, and decides to leave the miscreant, the miscreant's past deeds can certainly affect a custody determination.

Are we really sure the "miscreant" is the ex?
