What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TN I loaned $2500 cash to a relative in early January of this year (2016). It was to help them catch up on some rent and the like. I was told I would be repaid at $400 a month. I have not received any money from them. In fact, they moved from their location at the time of the loan. They still live in this city of about 17,000. I have not heard from them. How do I go about taking them to court to get my money back?

I know everyone and their dog by now has told you to never loan money to relatives .
If there is a signed contract specifying its a loan and not a gift and when and how much is to be paid back take it to small claims. You may not get any money back if they don't have any but you can get a judgement against them .
Something similar happened to me when I sold something on payments and they didn't pay , it was under $5000 so I could take it to small claims . I had the contract they signed so I won a judgement against them but never saw a penny , they were broke as all get out .
This as 35 years ago so today they might take it out of their income tax return, sale of a house - something that gets reported to the state/fed govt . POSSIBLY. Go to your county courthouse and ask where small claims is and they will give you the paper work to fill out right there.

With such a nebulous agreement, you can only sue for the amount you are owed. Realistically? I don't think you have ANY lawsuit at this time. Small claims or otherwise. PERHAPS, after the end of the month, you can sue for $400 with an additional $400 for each month that passes afterwards.

Who wants a list of relatives that owe me money? ROFLMAO. When you loan it, you never expect it back. Once it is in full default, sue in small claims for a judgment, but do not hold your breath waiting until you collect the judgment.
