Will drunk driver's insurance help my brother?

Your brother should be talking to them. They really have no obligation to speak with you.
Yeah, I know. But my brother isn't exactly the brightest person. If I give him the phone number, he wouldn't call them. Whenever anything gets the slightest bit complicated, he gives up on it or comes up with excuses. I couldn't even talk him into getting renter's insurance about 6 months ago when he was offered a good deal on it. He kept telling me, "I don't have all that much of value. I probably wouldn't get anything for my stuff anyway". But now that he lost everything, he finally sees how much stuff costs. Furniture, appliances, electronics, clothing, etc. really add up.

So anyway, I'm just trying to be a brother by helping him out by asking the questions he doesn't know to ask. He won't go on forums like this. I'm trying to find out what can be known and then give him the information and hope he sees value in it enough to do his part. It's crazy I have to do this considering the fact that I'm actually 10 years younger than he is. But maybe being younger makes it more likely for me to be willing to use technology to get information. My brother won't even go on the internet most of the time. Too afraid he'll get a virus.

Realistically you are doing nothing more than spinning your wheels...your brother would be lucky to eventually see a couple of bucks out of this a couple of years from now.
That's possible. But it's better than nothing. Besides, if all the other people who lost everything feel the same way, then maybe my brother would get more. Also, not all of the 31 people who were displaced actually lost everything. I believe only 8 apartments were gutted by the fire. But since the building is now condemned and will be torn down, everyone in the building was displaced, even though their individual apartments were untouched by the fire--meaning they lost nothing of their possessions. They simply get to move their stuff out and find somewhere else to live. Those people probably wouldn't even be collecting anything from the drunk driver's insurance because they didn't actually lose anything.

Bet he wishes he had renter's insurance now. its starting to sound as if your more worried about getting money than he is. I'm kinda starting to sense the dark side here. Don't get me wrong, I get You don't want your brother to get screwed out of everything he owns but that's what happens when you haven't prepared for things like this. Does the apartment complex have other non damaged apartments open? Can he get one? If not are they going to provide alternate housing until his apartment is livable again? Has You checked with goodwill , salvation army , or any place like that that would be willing to assist with some of the lost items? ( bed, furniture , clothes ) I believe they can help with displaced tenants but i'm not 100% sure. it would be worth a call anyway.

Uh, OP said the building was condemned and will be TORN DOWN, so when would you expect the apartment to be livable again?

Your brother shouldn't expect to see a dime.
Don't be so pessimistic! I wrote to the police department who arrested the drunk driver and asked about it. He told me the guy is insured. He gave me the name of the insurance company, the claim number and name and phone number of the person handling the claim.

The guy destroyed an entire building - your brother isn't going to get anything out of this.

The building he lived in will be torn down. But he's being allowed to move (temporarily, as in for 3 months) into a nearby building where the qualifications are that you have to be either 62 or disabled. He is 54, so he can only be there temporarily. He just moved in today. As for the other assistance you mentioned, he's been getting that.

You say "its starting to sound as if your more worried about getting money than he is. I'm kinda starting to sense the dark side here". I'm not sure what you mean here. I'm just trying to look out for him. He's the type that likes to give up on things, even things he's entitled to. He's a pessimistic kind of person. Not the type to go online and do a little research and make some phone calls. I know how to do things like that and want to put my talent to use to help him rather than watch him have to just scrape by after losing everything because of what a drunk driver did. I'm sure you'd do the same for a friend or relative if you had the chance.

As for the condition of the building, I'll let you see for yourself. My brother's car is on the far right in the first image, which also shows the front of the building. The drunk driver hit the back of the building, which is in the 3rd image. The second image shows the burned out wreckage of the drunk driver's car.

The present condition of the building is irrelevant as it's been ordered to be torn completely down.

You're either not reading or you're not understanding what you're being told.

Help your brother pay for an attorney before you make it even messier.
Hahaha! What have I done to make anything messy? All I did was help him get the phone number of the person who is handling the claim so he can contact them and get started.

Fantastic - this is the first indication you've given that your brother is going to be working on this. Ultimately, that's what needs to happen.
