What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Tennessee

Can a party (or the attorney) in a divorce/custody issue request the installation of a Special Master, or does that order have to come from (be initiated by) the judge?

If a party asks (motions) for one, the court might consider it. Usually the court might appoint one if the issues get too technical and it would take up too much of the court's time. But, depending on the reason why asked, who knows? It certainly is not prohibited to ask.
