Culver City, CA ... 16 y/p chargeb w/ an infraction for petty theft for stealing $46.00 of make-up at store in a mall. Will this charge show up on any type of back. check? Will it affect job opportunities or college applications?

The charge will only show up on more extensive background checks that might include records checks with local police departments, or the courts (if charges are actually pursued in court). A conviction would be far more likely to show up on a public records check.

However, as there is no such animal as a generic background check, we have no way of knowing what a potential employer might discover. If you seek a security clearance or employment as a peace officer, this will probably appear. If not, then a conviction will make it more likely, but still not a guarantee depending on what the prospective employer does.

As an infraction, this should not even have to be revealed in CA so it should have no real effect on anything.
