Alright, so over 9 months ago I met a girl with a very messed up history. She has mental issues and more. I have been a caregiver for over the past 9 months and recently a little over a month ago she left. She left all of her belongings. Throughout the course of this relationship she never did not contribute financially to help better our situation. She had limited means but never did offer. This put me in a situation where I am now financially strung out. Now over 10 days ago I made a request that her items be picked up through text. She responded and said I don't care what to do with them throw them away. When she left she had full means of getting all of her items out. Now of course since then I have not thrown the things away nor care to throw a majority of it away. At this rate I would like to try to get back some of the money that I am out from this horrendous relationship. I have contacted the police. But they legally so far cannot help too much unless I was allowed someone to come and meet to pick up the items. I don't care for her family to come here, and the only person that I would trust getting the items would be her and it's barely any trust there at this rate. She has extremely limited means of coming down here to acquire the items. At this residence she did receive mail but it was not a true lease or contract to live there. And also this is in the state of Tennessee. I don't know the full laws and I tried looking up some but I would like some help in any way that I can. She financially cannot get herself down here to get the items nor financially try to pay back any wrongdoings overtime. What can I do with these items? I would like to give her I guess a formal notification to pick the things up and I don't know the timelines that I'm allowed to offer and under what circumstances.

Here's an easy-to-read article on the topic: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/handling-tenants-abandoned-property-tennessee

And an attorney blog post (*no endorsement, just info*): http://www.knoxleaselaw.com/Articles/abandon.htm

Instead of relying on internet summaries I suggest you read Section 66-28-405 which addresses the issue of a tenant's abandoned property:

http://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/2015/title-66/chapter-28/part-4/section-66-28-405/

Treat her as a tenant and follow the statute to the letter and make sure you document every step.

Her problems in getting her stuff are not your problems.

In the future, don't bring home any boojum no matter how hard up you are.
