I've been having issues with my son leaving without permission since he was around 15. It depends on the situation bc my son left at 16 and comes and goes as he pleases. Some cops used to bring him back while others said let him where he's at if he's safe. Now he's 17, and the system does not allow me to have control over when he's home or not home. They say I'm causing trouble if I keep calling the cops on him when he's not doing anything wrong. They tell me that he's not hurting anyone and he's with a friend. Recently he didn't like that I said he couldn't go with a friend that he's gotten into trouble with before so he did what he wanted and left. I called the cops and he called CYS and they told him he can stay where he wants. The cops told him to come home while CYS said he didn't have to. He's been home maybe twice in the past two months. The law doesn't always make the child go home. I know a young lady that's leaving her mother to live with her friend in about a year and she'll only be 17. I guess each case is different. I'm wondering myself what the legal age is to leave home so I know.

Buttrfly3, I believe the question you ask here is the same question you asked in your first thread - and that question already has been answered.

Here is a link to your earlier thread on this same topic: https://forum.freeadvice.com/child-custody-visitation-37/legal-age-leave-home-632441.html

If you are NOT Butterfly76 from Oklahoma, then you will need to provide the name of your state.

At the age of majority (18 years old in most states, older in a couple) he may leave home without his parents' permission. There are three or four states where a loophole in the law will not allow the police to drag a recalcitrant 17-year-old back home. Since you did not mention your state, there is no way to look this up.

Sadly, those states where 17 year olds may leave home also still require the parent to provide for the child and be legally responsible for their actions, even though they are unable to legally control them. Tragic state loopholes.
