What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

Is it illegal to obtain a false ID? I mean using someone else birth certificate to obtain a state issued drivers license, and social security card. This was done by a friend over 30 years ago who never heard anything about it. They eventually went back to their real ID after a few years. No crime was commited with the "false ID". I understand this was done because the real ID would land the friend in prison, but the charges were dropped when the person could not be located. Is there any worry today? What are the crimes, and how serious are they?

It's called "identity theft" and it's pretty darned serious. (Even if no crimes were committed with the stolen identity - and while you say "no crimes were committed" a crime actually was committed: the crime of absconding from a prison sentence while using stolen identification.) There is always a possibility your friend will be found out, at which point he will be in big legal doo-doo.
