What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? WV
My husband was offered, and accepted, a place to live in 2011. The owner told him he could live here and do whatever he wanted to improve the place, but that the owner would do no improvements. The owner quoted a price if husband wanted to buy it outright, but then told my husband he could pay him whatever he wanted when he had money. My husband offered the gentleman payment of a few hundred dollars numerous times, and the owner refused every time, saying husband needed it more than he does.
I married husband in 2013, but have lived here since 2012. My kids live here, too. Owner is aware of the four of us living here. I've met him, he's very nice, wouldn't take money from me, either. We've offered between $150-500 probably 25 or more times, every time the owner refuses. The owner calls it our home, our 4 acres, etc. He's literally told my husband it belongs to us, but on paper it's still the owner's property.
The owner is very old, he is a family friend of my husband, the husband was best friends with the owner's brother who passed away in 2011.
We live here day to day, all utilities in our names, mailing address is ours, for all intents and purposes, it's our home. Legally, do we have any rights? What if owner dies and his niece and nephew inherit the place and tell us to leave, what are our rights then?
