Is it legal in the state of Connecticut for a furniture lease store to call one of your references in order to pass a message along about your current account with them? I was under the impression that my references would only be used before they decided to start a lease contract with me, not to pass messages through them. I am late by a week and a half for payment but my reference is not a secondary account holder. Although the voicemail did not mention anything other than who the message was in reference to, what would they have said if my reference called them back? Is this legal?

Is your contact information that you left with the furniture lease store up-to-date? Have you avoided responding to calls or messages from the furniture lease store?

Yes, it's legal.

They don't ask for those references to check if you are going to pay, they can run your credit report for that.

They ask for that information so they can skip trace if you don't pay.

Ever fill out those forms at the doctor or dentist office that ask for the name of a close friend or relative for contact in case of emergency. That's also for skip tracing if you don't pay the bill. If you had a heart attack in their office they'd be calling 911 and not your close friend or relative.
