Debt collector and identity theft

My ex boyfriend and I got a car at a dealership. Both of our names are on it. So when we got car insurance from progressive it was under his name. I was the secondary driver. I was paying for the car insurance but stopped paying for it because I became unemployed and the debt collector called the exboyfriend for payment. He is saying he is going to file a police report for identity theft because its the only way to get it off his credit. Can he do that if he is one of the owners of the car and my name is also on the insurance as a secondary driver? He did know about the car insurance and when we got it.

He can do it, but when the police come to talk to you he may have some explaining to do. In fact, he may very well face charges for filing a false police report.

His name is on the car, the car loan, and the OLD car insurance (which is what he is trying to try identity theft for) My name is also on the old car insurance as a secondary driver and also on everything else. I have since gotten different car insurance and his name is not on it. What will happen to me if anything? That is what I am most worried about.
