What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Kentucky.
My 20 yr old grandson who lives in Indiana ignored a letter of notification of the fine to pay from a small town in Alabama. He was travelling thru on the way to FLA last year with friends when pulled over for open container. His brother who was driving probably handed the can to him and he took the rap. Now they want him to appear Monday at 1:00 and he obviously waited too long (Opps, Alabama is 9 hrs from where he lives). Clerk's office said he MUST appear or send a lawyer to do the same. What does he do?

If the court said your grandson could send a lawyer to appear in his place, he could try to find an attorney at this late date ... or start his travel to Alabama now so he doesn't miss the court hearing.

The fine for open container is $25 but the offense is charged as a Class C misdemeanor. Here is a link to the law: http://codes.findlaw.com/al/title-32-motor-vehicles-and-traffic/al-code-sect-32-5a-330.html

He either appears or hires an attorney.
