What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Washington State.
I live in Washington state, and I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but here it goes. I made a huge mistake. I left my bill of sale and my car title in an envelope in my glove compartment. It has been there since I purchased the car. The other night I stupidly and accidentally left my car unlocked overnight in my apartment complex. I woke up the next morning to see that it had been ransacked. My iPod was stolen as well as my bill of sale and car title (signed). I filed a police report and plan on going to the licensing place first thing in the morning to get a replacement title. My question is: what is going to come of this? What can I do to ensure I do not get my car taken from me? What are my legal rights, if any? Where do I go from here? Please help, I am hopeless and confused.

Sorry for the confusion--I meant that the title was signed by me, and the car is in my name. I paid it off earlier in the year and I am the owner.

Then get to the DMV ASAP and get a duplicate title.

Make sure you bring a copy of your police report and advise the DMV that the original was stolen.

That should take care of it but you can also try contacting the previous owner to see if he will sign another bill of sale.
