What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Pennsylvania

I am seriously disabled vet, housebound and presently in a hospital bed at home. With all over rsd/crps the VA is doing everything it can to make my home comfortable. Any surgery or treatments done have not helped anything I have because I also have painful Hyperacusis (sound is painful). I live on tiny dead-end and after 15 years of lost trucks & back-up alarms & a LOUD diesel truck each giving me bad seizures, and keeping my whole body in excruciating pain. One of the worst is the borough garbage truck, it backs in to my home from Main ST, backing up over 200 feet for grass clippings or garbage. My doctor has written two letters to borough & I have given them information explaining painful hyperacusis. I have begged for a sign at street entrance NO TRUCKS or DISEL VEHICLES turnaround dead-end, but they hate veterans, & find my requests humorous. There is only two houses here and my home is basically the dead end which receives the trucks alarm sound waves. Their truck today picked up 2 - 1/2 full containers of grass clippings. The seizures over time got real bad, and my doctor just said my whole body is in shock. There is no good reason not to place the sign on road entrance and end this nightmare. Moving from here is impossible, as it is hard to move to the bathroom. Hospital settings with alarms beeping, cell phones & elevators, laughter, car key lock alarms all do the same thing. The borough is literally causing catastrophic injury, and soon death, to me inside my own home. What can I do?

Contact your state representative. See if you can get a sign installed with help from his/her office. Here is a link for help in finding your legislator: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/index.cfm?mobile_choice=suppress

Unfortunately, many noises cannot be avoided (e.g., low-flying planes, car alarms, garbage trucks) and there is no legal action available.

Good luck.

Your sensitivity to sound is truly unfortunate. I'll be praying for you. However, I do not see any legal recourse, nor do I think a sign will help you. Those other home owners still need services that will require trucks and even diesel vehicles. Even with a sign, without a law, there would be no legal recourse for violations. You live on a public street. You'll need to come up with another solution.

Thank you for your service!

Hyperacusis, like tinnitus, can be a difficult disorder to live with and, while there is no known cure, there are ways some have found that help mitigate the misery.

Earplugs or earmuffs have been found to help. Desensitization therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy can help. Even reducing stress and anxiety and getting a good night's sleep can help.

Shadowbunny has provided a good resource.

I, too, thank you for your service.

Good luck.

Thank you, and you are welcome, it was an honor and privilege to serve our blessed country. I have seen signs for NO TRUCKS deaf children playing. I had a bad tbi injury on left side of head, and have left side Trigeminal Neuralgia, & rsd/crps for 41 years. The damaged nerves face scalp whole spine also have the rsd/crps, which means the ear canals burn bad, so I cannot wear ear plugs or anything on my scalp. I cannot use the phone, and my speech is very hard to understand. The VA has sent me to best audiologist in the US that treats Hyperacusis in 2014. Then to John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland in 2015, and one of the best neurosurgeons in the country at Ohio State U in 2016 where they have put a chip in a monkeys brain, and helped a paralyzed man move his arm.

I am dying here from my bodies reaction to the trucks backup alarms, and there is only one other home on this dead end right across from mine. (road entrance is 2 backyards of homes on Main ST). On the right side of my home there is active railroad tracks and I sleep right through the trains, which do not bother me. On the left side of my home is a tiny 35 ft wide x 50 ft clear area, which runs along the length of my home, that is the rear of an unusable old 1920’s garage made of now crumbling asbestos brick. The borough garbage truck could drive in normal, and back up sending five backup alarm beeps into the front of neighbor’s home vs the 60 plus alarms blasting into my whole home as it backs in the 200 feet from Main ST.. No other trucks should be using this tiny area to turn around period. It is so small tractor trailers have to back up into my home three or four times to face Main ST again (bad drivers many more times). I do not believe Lady Justice would allow someone to live in and die in such extreme pain, when it could be easily avoided minus the few dirty corrupt council members, and one good attorney.

I understand how difficult it is for you. There just isn't a legal solution to what you are experiencing.

Again I suggest contacting your state representative if your city officials are not being helpful.

It might also help to contact an area news organization. Most news groups have "call for action" teams that will work with consumers to find remedies to problems that the consumers have been unable to solve on their own. It could be worth a call or two.

I would think your described situation is one that warrants the placement of a sign on your street.

Good luck.

Im not being insensitive to your plight but suggesting the world conform to your unique needs is a bit rediculous. If I don’t want to hear traffic I live where there is no traffic. You can’t expect traffic, especially traffic that is on your road for a valid lawful purpose, to simply stop driving on your road. Stop trying to get others to conform to your needs and find a place you can live in peace.

Although I understand what you are saying, there are many instances where people are made to bend to the needs of others, when health is an issue. Schools, for example, limit or prohibit peanut products if a student has a severe peanut allergy. Signs are placed on roads warning of deaf children in the area. And I used to live on a street where trucks were not allowed.

On a street with two houses, the installation of a NO TRUCKS sign seems a legitimate request to prevent harm to a resident.

So what does op and neiighbor do with refuse the garbage truck is picking up? That appears to be the only offending vehicle. Is op willing to take his and neighbors refuse to the dump using his own vehicle and time or money?

Is op going to pick up ups/fedex/dhl deliveries for the neighbor?

Even where roads that are marked “no trucks”, there are exceptions for trucks using the roads for a specific purpose. The prohibition of trucks is typically in using the road as a throughway either due to the size limitations of the road or that the road was not constructed to withstand the weight.

And I know it is morbid humor but I simply can’t help it;

I think more responsibility should be placed on the parents of dead children to take better care of them.

Oops. DEAF not DEAD.

(I changed my post)

And, again, I understand your point. It is a good one.

JAL, I get what you're saying, but moving is a daunting task for able-bodied people. The OP is severely disabled, and currently house-bound. I just don't know if moving is doable, and he's only asking for the garbage trucks to not show up, not delivery trucks.

OG may be on to something. Perhaps there's a non-profit agency that may be able to help with sound-proofing the house.

He’s asking that all trucks be prohibited. Take note of the lost semis that make noise

It is odd that the train that runs close doesn’t cause a problem yet a semi tractor will. Given they are roughly the same level of sound and the sound of each is primarily due to a Diesel engine, it strikes me as at least a curious point. Maybe the frequency of each is different or the train’s sound attenuated in a different manner than the trucks and that knowledge could be used to provide some sound dampening effect in op’s home.

It’s also a bit odd op lives on Main Street and there are enough lost semis that it’s a problem. Don’t they drive down Main Street as well?

Maybe the op could look into active noise cancelation aka active noise reduction for his home. There are some interesting gadgets available. There is even a production car that uses it to make the interior of the car quieter.
