Can my social security benefits be garnished, i chose direct deposit, if I'm unable to pay hospital bills.

No, they cannot be garnished, as in being intercepted before you get it.

There is even protection after the money goes into your account by direct deposit.

I agree entirely with adjusterjack, but will add the following:

SS Benefits can only be garnished for government debt or child support. They cannot be garnished for consumer debt.
