Hi. I recently flew to New York to buy a car. Now that I am in Texas I cannot get my plates because the New York dealership did not add taxes to the loan finance amount. And I don’t have the extra money to pay for it out of pocket (over $1000). I contacted the New York dealer but he said it is illegal to charge out of state people taxes. Is there a way around this? I asked another dealership about this and they said that he should have charged me Texas taxes. Is it illegal for New York dealerships to charge me New York taxes? Texas taxes?

How would a dealership with absolutely not ties to Texas be able to collect and remit taxes to Texas on your behalf? Why would they?

Texas taxes vary county to county and by city within a county. It is not the NY dealers responsibility to finance your taxes. The way around it is go and get a loan or otherwise come up with the cash to pay your TX sales tax.
