The excitement of developing a brand new product or service and springing up with a reputation, emblem and/or tagline, combined with the additional time and legwork needed in conducting a trademark search, leads some folks to only forgo it altogether. however, you must forever conduct an expert trademark search before each exploitation the mark and file a registration for it. If you ask your question of a legal professional in Canada, I recommend you either leave out the part I bolded above or reword it so it makes sense. :)

I cannot think of any country where it would not be smart to do a thorough trademark search prior to using a mark, checking for both registered marks and unregistered marks.
