Nursing home bill for deceased father

Life insurance went directly to funeral home..it was just enough to pay for funeral and arrangements.

I'll ask one more time: Who was the beneficiary of the life insurance policy?

Beneficiaries were myself and my 2 sisters. The Life Insurance policy check was paid directly to funeral home to cover the costs of the funeral. There was nothing left.

Then, quite honestly, I would suggest that you and your two sisters seek reimbursement from the estate for those funeral expenses. You would have priority over every other creditor (except for the costs of administration.)

I agree ...if the nsurance was payable to his children that's their money and not part of estate ...there may be a moral duty for dad's funeral costs but odds are the administrator can reimburse you for advancing the payment of same...and it's in the sequence posted by others. ....nursing home is down the list.

I don't know where down the list the expenses of child seeking guardianship fall or even if they fall on list at all...but it may be there are insufficient funds to get past first few priorities of the list and the question is moot.

Nursing home

If a family member signed The Admission Agreement for the nursing home does that mean that person is financially liable for the bill at the nursing home? My father is deceased. State of Michigan.

Well that person should be very nervous pending a careful review of exactly what he or she signed.

My guess is that said person was not very careful in what they signed and signed a form stating they would be personally financially responsible to pay the bills ....

I agree with the above post. When I was helping my wife sign her parents into a care facility there were a lot of forms and things to fill in. One bit of info was basically who on the outside does the facility call or send statements to for issues relating to the parents. That would be my wife. She would write the checks out of her parent's bank account. A different question translated to "who is financially responsible for the bill." At first we thought it was asking who would be signing the checks and paying the bills, but they really were wanting one of us to commit to be financially responsible. I'm glad we caught the difference although they both died before the estate ran dry.
