I'm trying to register a box truck as a motorhome. I know it is possible because its been done, but I called the DMV and was told they won't allow me to do so because the vehicle weighs more than 10,000 lbs. The relevant statute, AS 28.10.421, It doesn't say anything about the weight of a motor home. So what will I have to do to get it registered?

Have you done the conversion yet, or are you just trying to claim that your truck is a motorhome?

AS 28.10.421, doesn't define what IS a motor home. It just puts trucks over 10,000 lbs into a different class than smaller, non-commercial vans/trucks for setting the fee.

When converting buses and trucks to motor home, it takes more than just the mere assertion that the thing is a motor home.

In order to register a heavy vehicle, it requires an IRS tax form.

It sounds to me as if the problem with registration of the box truck as a motor home is less about the designation of the vehicle as a motor home and more about the lack of adequate documentation to allow for registration.

If the vehicle is under 55K# it looks like there is a way around the federal tax form.

Less than 55,000 lbs.
If the weight is less than 55,000 lbs., the vehicle owner must select exempt and sign to certify in the commercial section of the Vehicle Transaction Application (Form 812) each time the registration is renewed. This form must be submitted in place of IRS Form 2290.
