in a surprising twist, i just received a call from a supervisor of the ohio department of tax compliance division. they finally got to my stuff and found they made the error. They are currently refunding my my state of Ohio "offset" (which i will receive in 22 business days). The federal offset is being handled by the attorney generals office, which can take up to 8 months.

I am not sure if I can use this to get the tax lien removed from my credit report or not. I sure hope so
They should remove the lien. However, I am not sure that you can call it "their error".

You need to get a letter from the state stating that it was an error. Once you have that you can file it with all three credit bureaus to get a removal. You can usually file a document such as this online and the bureaus tend to act quickly.

I had this happen to me a few years ago and once I got the documentation from the state the matter of the credit report updates was resolved within a week.
