I live in Iowa.

I was suicidal then not sought help with the police department.

Forced to go to a mental hospital now they want me to pay a bill even though I was brought there at gunpoint in handcuffs against my will.

You were taken to the hospital by the police at gunpoint in handcuffs? Why at gunpoint and in handcuffs?

You are responsible for the costs incurred for your stay at the hospital and your treatment while there.

I hope you are continuing with treatment.

Good luck.

Just work the system and then declare medical bankruptcy. Repeat as needed. If you have a mental health problem and you or your family isn't super rich (and willing to pay) that's pretty much going to be your future no matter what.

Be really mean to the CSRs who try to recover any money. It makes their day.

There is no such thing as a "medical bankruptcy". You either file chapter 7 or chapter 13 bankruptcy on all your debts including all your assets or you don't file.

I don't know where you get the 4%. I believe the percentage could be higher than that.

Here is a link to Snopes "fact check" on bankruptcies due to medical bills: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/643000-bankruptcies-in-the-u-s-every-year-due-to-medical-bills/
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2018/03/26/the-truth-about-medical-bankruptcies/?utm_term=.115e9df2700d

But, basically the seriously mentally ill are very very likely to experience ongoing relapsing medical care of an extremely expensive sort, and much less likely to recieve any public or private aid than sufferers of a physical illness (because it is complex or shameful), and the recurrent nature of the disorder often precludes disability and normal work is vocationally healthy

People think nothing of crowdfunding for their chemo.
Do you think "Crowdfund my ECT*" is going to get any traction?

(ECT is a powerful lifesaving treatment)

Big bills + Small income/support/etc = Your are gonna be owing a lot of people a LOT of money. Forever. Repeatedly.

That's true whether you're confused by adjectives or not.

I'm not sure what that article is intended to show. It clearly states that it is talking about "bankruptcies" due to medical debts. There is no section of the bankruptcy code that allows for a "medical bankruptcy".

I know that you are talking about bankruptcies due to medical debts, but your post implied that there was unique process to discharge medical debts alone, and there is not.

They were under the impression and a misunderstanding that I would hurt myself.

They did not understand that by the time they have been contacted I was so far beyond the suicidal thing.

The "treatment" I received was not consensual and useless.

I was released by a doctor because I was determined to not be a threat to myself or anyone else.

I understand paying a bill for a service or goods that I requested but how can I pay for something that was forced on me?

If I was taken by force to McDonald's and forced to buy cheeseburgers at gunpoint , would I be expected to pay that back?

If you were unconscious after a car accident, and the doctors "forced" their services on you, you would still be required to pay.

You said you called the police and told them you were suicidal. Police officers are not doctors so they really had no choice but to transport you to the hospital for an evaluation.

You are responsible for the costs of evaluation and treatment.

I don't quite understand the need for the police to handcuff you or escort you at gun point - but I suppose something you said or did made them feel this was necessary.

You can try to work with the hospital on a payment plan for the bills that fits your budget.

Good luck.

Once he was in cuffs, the guns were put away. The OP is being overly dramatic.
