Apartment Complex Doing 4 Month Long Repipe Project, No Compensation... Advice?

Our old loft style apartment complex is doing a complete repipe of their entire complex. They have told us it will take a total of 4 months. I work from home in Georgia
- We will be without water 5 days a week, from 10AM-4PM every day for an entire 2 1/2 month span while (A building is being renovated).
- For 7 days during the 4 month span, our specific unit will have dry wall cut out and all pipes replaced
The complex is offering no compensation whatsoever... can they legally force us to be without water from 10AM-4PM every day for 2 1/2 months (barring no delays)?

Your city can tell you if they would require something to be done that would allow for temporary by passing of the worked on areas daily. Other wise sounds to me like you may well want to invest in empty say 5 gallon jugs and re fill every day when you do have water so during the down time youll have some water on hand.

But that is not correct. They ARE providing water. There is simply a temporary lack of water from 10AM to 4PM M-F. Someone can schedule their showers for outside of that period of time and as FarmerJ suggested fill some jugs to have water available outside of those hours. The downside is the toilet. However, there is one good flush available after the water is turned off, and a 5 gallon jug will fill up the tank enough for another flush, and maybe two. Most single people could deal with that 10AM-4PM period without a flush if they put paper in a waste can and a little bleach in the toilet.

Yes, we can read. It's 6 hours a day out of 24. You are not going to be "compensated".

You've been given some easy workarounds to get you through it.

Don't worry about other people. Don't worry about blanket assertions youve only hear about.

Worry about how they respond to your specific request - IN WRITING.

What are you looking for as compensation?

Are you desiring to void your lease?

I understand that. However, whether its a week or 2 1/2 months is still only 10AM to 4:00PM. It's still only 6 hours a day out of 24.

All the landlord apologists are out in force like this isn't a very serious and disruptive construction project that will be ongoing for the majority of 3 monthly rental periods...

The OP needs to:
1. address his concerns specifically to the landlord in writing
2. have a clear idea of what he wants
3. respond to the landlord's specific reply
4. follow up, if need be with a lawyer.

Telling someone what fraction of the day 6 hours is... that's remedial math, not legal advice.

There is no landlord/tenant statute in Georgia that would require a landlord to compensate you for this inconvenience. You may find some relief by contacting your local Code Enforcement office regarding this matter but while they have no legal power to force a landlord to compensate you the best they might do is argue for condemnation of the unit; if so, you would need to vacate the rental property.

Its 10AM to 4PM guaranteed. However the water is subject to be off all working project hours of 8AM - 5PM
