If I understood correctly you agreed to replace the carpet. This carpet by now would have been max. 5 years old.

Why would you break your agreement and not stick to your word?
No. That is not what OP agreed to. OP agreed to have crappy old carpeting that nobody would worry about trashing because it was already trashed.

LL said, basically, "You look like people who would just trash new carpeting anyhow, so I'm not going to replace the old trashed carpeting before you move in."

That's how I read it as well.

Prior to this never had a bad history, and landlord said I have been the best tenant they’ve ever had. So go figure. I might be trash. Who knows.
Your LL is being ridiculous, and you were smart not to have him put in new carpet right before you moved in. Because, well, kids and dogs. So IF he tries to ding you, you have recourse.
