can a new york state registered sex offender get off the registry early? i am about to complete my 10 years of probation in a month with no violations..all fines paid..classes completed etc. im supposed to be on the registry an additional 10 years and would love to know if theres any way to get off this earlier than the full 20 years. any advice would be appreciated. thanks,

How long is the SO supposed to be registered for? How long has the SO actually been on the registry? What was the conviction for? Who are you in this situation?

How old was the victim?

Were you convicted of a Class E felony? Did you serve jail time?

You are unlikely to succeed in this request under any circumstances without the assistance of counsel.

You mention that you have no violation or issues... but do you have "clear and convincing evidence that his or her risk of repeat offense and threat to public safety is such that registration or verification is no longer necessary "

A clean probation record does not suffice to establish that. That's the bare minimum conduct of probation.

the victim was 14 at time i was 22. it was class e felony. ive held fulltime job for 8 years now..own a home..car..am a positive contributing member to society and my current probation officer has said numerous times he does not see me posing any threat to anyone or of reoffending again in the future. i also have a letter from taking a sex offender class where therapist says my chances of reoffending are highly unlikely and doubtful.

i was sentenced to 90 days in jail. i served 60 for good behavior. i also am and have been lowest level of 1 for the sex offender level.

Considering that the victim was a child ..I highly doubt that you will be getting off the registry before your 20 is up.

I'm sorry, but our crystal ball was spirited away by a roving band of free-lance fortune tellers just last week. Perhaps an attorney in your area would be able to answer your question...

That said, the law seems strangely silent level 1 people. So no, I couldn't find any "clear writing" on it.

i would presume that somewhere in the law books it would tell if and or when someone could petition to be taken off the registry if it were in fact possible.
