I am a movie prop collector and have a question regarding the original copyright of a movie prop and any images which were taken of it during its use in production. If there is a screen matched movie prop (irrefutably the one on camera) which is seen in multiple shots from the movie and which was used in multiple publicity stills for the same, as the now legal owner of that prop, do I have any rights to use said publicity stills as part of my display? Was there any transfer of rights when the legal ownership changed and where would I stand in regards to copyright infringement for using pictures of my own legal property if I cannot obtain permission from the original owner? I am asking this question because despite months of work and attempts to contact the studio who owned the prop originally, I have had zero response. To summarize, if I am the legal owner of a particular prop, does that grant me any privileges now in regards to previously taken photographs of that prop? Thank you.
