Literally, nobody on this thread even knows that anything was actually said.

That's my point. Thus, depending on what was actually said there might be a defamation claim there. We have no idea if it was a factual statement or one of opinion, and if the former, we don't know if it was true or false.

I guess what I'm saying is that we don't even know that this is a real situation, or a real one with fake facts thrown in. At a certain point, assumptions will be made - and must be. That's really the essence of a forum such as this. We're not in court and are free to take certain liberties and make certain assumptions. I will say that I do understand where you are coming from...I really do

Ok. Our suspicion is that Sam likes Bob for this reason.
Although Sam should be cautious with Bob (who knows what Bob is telling other clinics) but Sam gets info who is trying to leave/quit.

Also, I am neither Bob, Joe, Sam. I am a friend of Joe.
Joe feels trapped and afraid to apply elsewhere because Sam works in a lot of clinics in the area.
What can Joe do?

He can continue to do what he's doing. I'm not sure that you have (rather, he has) a legal question here.

Joe can either look for another job and quit the one he has when he finds one, or he can suck it up and continue working where he is.
