You'll have to decide how important this is to you because there is no guarantee that the HOA will agree to go along with what you want. Even if you are on the board you are only one of several people on it. If it truly bothers you then you may want to look for another place that you really like as it is right now so that you don't have to depend on others later to get what you want.
