With “multiple drug-related charges” pending, it could be difficult trying to sustain a not guilty plea over time. ;)

I hope Crystalmeth (or friend) is seeking treatment.
I have to note that if OP is trying to "help" the defendant, s/he is not presenting a very good case for the defendant by using "CrystalmethOd" for a user name.

It was a long day...

Well then he has a fool for a client.
Crystalmeth’s friend really needs an attorney - and there should be no reason not to have one. He is either eligible for a public defender or has been determined to have enough income to afford an attorney.

Crystal perhaps can best help her friend by getting other friends/family to chip in to help pay for an attorney.

The problem is that sometimes that determination that the defendant can afford an attorney is not realistic. The guidelines for what counts as being able to afford a lawyer is, in some places, too low.

Possibly. In that case, it is time to contact family and friends and sell assets.

The drug charges essentially have been “on hold” for three years. The friend should have been working these past three years on getting money together for legal representation so he can best avoid 5 years in prison - assuming he has not been in jail during this time (in which case, that opens up a new legal avenue to explore).
