Hi, My question is: the child lives with his father and his mother lives on the east coast, but comes to visit him monthly. The father wants to move really far from their current house which would mean that the child would have to finish his last year in high school somewhere else. The parents asked us (aunt and uncle) to let the child move in with us so he wouldn't have to change schools. The parents have joined custody, we have no say in how the child is raised. If he moves in with us and God forbid something happens to the child at a party or whatever... can the parents come after us stating "we didn't allow" the kid to go to a party etc.? or what rights would we have? thank you so much for your answer....

There is a simple solution to that. Make the child get the parent's permission to do anything like that.

You also want copies of the health ins card for him but want to get a medical power of attorney so say if he must see a dentist you can handle that or gets a broken bone let alone covid19 or other conditions. On a side note you may want to ask the parents should they both pass away before he is 18 would they want you to become his legal guardian ?
