What is the name of your state? An 84 year old man and 75 year old women entered a restaurant were served a beverage and 1/2 later were approached by 2 police man (not wearing COV19 protection) and were asked to pay the bill and leave the establishment. When asked why, the police said they don't have to give a reason. With exception of the server there was no contact with any other manager or employee of the restaurant. The 84 year old man was issued a trespass order outside of the restaurant but refused to sign. No one gave any reason why. Subsequent correspondence was sent to the city to ask why they were humiliated and told to leave by the police.

Florida......

Thanks for sharing. Why do you care? This isn't your business and the police were right. They don't have to give you a reason.

EDIT: The private establishment also doesn't have give a reason.

Were you there? Are you the man or the woman that this happened to?

Pcarsonxx, are you the adult child of the 84 year old man or the 75 year old woman?

It sounds as if the couple did something wrong. I am pretty sure they know what it is.

I'm pretty sure that most establishments are allowed to refuse service at their discretion. Period.

I believe the "implied" question would be: Were the man and woman's rights violated?
Interestingly, the only question I inferred was how the OP could find out why this happened. S/he spent a lot of text pointing at that question.

The police were there because the restaurant called and asked that the couple be removed and given a trespass warning, meaning they didn't want the couple back. The restaurant has the right to kick out any patron for any reason other than illegal discrimination (i.e. because of their race, color, or religion under federal law and their race, color, national origin, sex, pregnancy, handicap, familial status, or religion under Florida law). The restaurant need not give a reason why either to the police or to the patrons. Nor do the police need to give a reason to the patrons, assuming they were even told what it was by the restaurant. Usually signing the trespass order only is an acknowledgement that the person has been advised of the trespass order. Not signing it, however, does not make the trespass order invalid. They were told they can't come back and thus if they do they face the risk of arrest for trespass.

Now I'm going to guess that there is more to this story. Restaurants are in the business of making money and they do that by serving patrons, not having them chucked out and told never to come back. So that suggests to me that one or both of them did something that the restaurant staff did not like. As quincy said, they likely have some idea of what that was. Knowing what that was would help shed light on the problem. But even if they truly don't know the reason, they still are stuck with the situation that they are banned from the place.

Since, nor the manager or any employee spoke to the patrons except the server who served them. No one in the restaurant notified them that after they were served they were no longer desired as customers and asked never to return. Can the Police legally be a representative of the restaurant, without written permission from the restaurant to issue a trespass order, absent of any public safety threat, and after the patrons were served, eject the patrons?
The restaurant previously ejected patrons because they failed to eat there food in a one-hour limitation beyond the restaurants COV19 rules for table turnover. Recognize that this sort of ejection is not as permanent as a trespass order. Who is Quincy (sp)? There is no more to the story than written here, except the Police did not adhere to COV19 rules, even though they had member of the department infected - the police station is literally 2 blocks away the street.

Were they taking up a table just for two drinks? That might be why the restaurant wanted them out.
