Correct. I'm triple checking what I owe the collection agency for the two medical debts.
Up until July 28, 2019, prejudgment interest could be up to 12%. After that date, the interest could not exceed 9%.

If you are running across both 12% and then 9% in the documents you received from the debt collection agency, the chances are pretty good that they figured the amount owing correctly - but it certainly is worth double (or triple :)) checking before you pay.

And if you can settle for less, great. Don't let the collection agency know you can pay in full if you are trying to negotiate for a smaller payoff amount.

That's where the confusion was. I do believe you're correct in that I was seeing prejudgment interest. I don't have the papers in front of me this second, but I'll check it again tonight.

I am not a "math person" so I don't envy you the task of checking the bills for accuracy. Good luck.

I just wanted to let everyone know I paid this debt in full and that the woman who previously talked with me was cordial and accommodated our requests for both written proof we paid, proper court procedures to dismiss the case entirely, and a good faith promise to remove it from our credit histories.

Thanks to everyone once again for all of the help and time. I'm already feeling a lot of relief in having this be done, as well as feeling more optimistic towards working to improve our credit.

Thank you for the update, Moofies.

I understand what a big relief it must be for you to no longer have the medical debt to worry about.

We all appreciate your thanks.
