You probably can take some comfort in knowing the belief, that the poor man’s copyright can prove and protect a copyright, is a longstanding and seemingly unshakable one.
I suppose that was my question... see, I *did* grant the person permission when they asked, a long time ago. It was just a casual message where I said I didn't mind if they reproduced it, but it was still permission.
So the question would be... am I am to revoke this permission at will?
For his friend? Yes. He can tell his friend to stop reproducing his work. He cannot remove what has already been used or published by the friend. And he has to prove he is the copyright holder, if his friend becomes unfriendly.
