Tax return is not processed

What is the name of your state? South Carolina
I filed 2020 tax return, jointly with my wife and children, in March 2021, and we owe money to IRS therefore wrote a personal check to IRS and attached it to the tax return and mailed by USPS. That check was cashed by IRS within few days after that. Yesterday when we checked our tax status by login to IRS website, it states that our tax return is not processed. Since 2020, until now, we did not receive any notice from IRS. Also, when I accessed our IRS account yesterday, it does not contain any notices to us and this verifies that we did not miss any letters sent by IRS.

Any reason why our 2020 tax return matter is like this? I tried to talk IRS but no one is picking up the phone.

Because the Service centers are way behind in their work, and processing paper returns is taking a very long time. This back up is the result of how hard the agency was hit by federal government covid protocols and the demands of getting out the economic stimulus payments. The Service Center will get around to processing it at some point.

Even many electronically filed returns are taking months (sometimes 6 months or more) to process. The IRS pulled some 30 million returns for manual review due to the Recovery Rebate Credit and the tax law changes that happened mid season. They do seem to be making some progress catching up on those, but they don't seem to be making the same progress on their mail.

Don't sweat it. Mine was like that for a while. I mailed the return on 4/12/2021 but made the payment online. I just checked again and a transcript of my return and payment record was available.

You might give it a few weeks and check again and then monthly if you like.

I am still in the same situation as before, let me repeat:

Any reason why our 2020 tax return matter is like this although we are enterting the year 2022 in a day?

No where on the IRS website does it use the term "not processed". It might say that your tax returning is processing or it might show that they have no record of your tax return, but it won't say "not processed". So, please be more specific about what it does actually say.

Thank you. I just logged in and it contains:

Under “Notices and letters” it says There are no notices at this time.

Under “Account Home” it says:

I'm still saying don't sweat it. You have your evidence of payment. You have not received any notice that you didn't file. There's nothing you can do about the delay or the condition of your account.

Find something else to pay attention to. Happy New Year.

Yesterday, I received a letter from IRS saying that the IRS is crediting that payment (that is IRS is NOT sending/giving me back that payment) I made but asked me to resend my 2020 tax return. Do I need to do it: I read news https://finance.yahoo.com/news/taxpayers-alarmed-irs-notice-asking-233837433.html
Please advice me.

Thank you and will resend.

Note: I made changes to my previous posting, after you responded: I am sorry, I did not provide/interpret the letter I received from IRS correctly earlier.

DON'T

The directions for the CP80 notice have changed: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp80-notice

In particular:
  • Due to processing delays for 2019 and 2020 tax returns, the issuance of CP80 and CP080 (Unfiled Tax Return – Credit on Account) notices has been suspended. If you received a notice for your 2019 return and you filed timely, please refile the return. If you received a notice for your 2020 return DO NOT refile.
If you insist on refiling, at least do so electronically,

My recommendation is that you do nothing until you have taken all correspondence to a tax professional for review.
