I am wanting to share about my son. He was Awol , left fort Bliss on June 4th and found his way home. He was less then 180days and in AIT training there. The reasons that he left are immaterial now. I want to say the the people at the GI RIghts Hotline are kind and have great advice. Sometimes it takes a day or 2 for them to get back to you but they will.
I called Fort Knox on July 6th and there was no packet on my son yet, he at this time had been gone 32 days. On July 24th I called his old unit at Fort Bliss and the first Sargent said he had been dropped DFR. I waited a few days and on Friday July 28th Fort Knox had his packet. We decided then to go to Fort Sill on Monday the 31st. On Sunday I called Fort Knox again just to be sure and was told again that there was a packet. I was also told there was NO Warrant... this was NOT TRUE. We went on monday to Fort Sill which is a 5 hour drive for us. We got there at 4pm, Chris was a nervious wreck and we pulled up to the gate and he told them he was awol. I guard asked me to pull the car over to the side and they asked for my sons id. They told him to sit in the car with me until a unit arrived. They took less then 2 minutes and the Fort Sill Police along with a MP showed up. They were very polite and courtious. They took my son to the patrol car , it was parked next to mine. The MP came and asked me if he had a bag, which he did, he took it from the back seat and placed it on the trunk of the patrol car. He then advised my son he was going to search it, they asked him to empty his pockets and put all his stuff in his bag. He did take extra personal underwear and toiletries like some other post had suggested. When they got ready to leave the MP told him to say goodbye and the police officer asked the MP if he was going to handcuff him and he said no. Chris road up front and off they went to the PCF. He did not get a chance to call me, I had given him a calling card, since no cell phones are allowed. I had told him I would be back on friday and for him to call me if otherwise. I picked him up yesterday at 4pm from the PCF in Fort Sill and we drove home today. He is out and will receive his DD214 in a number of weeks. He told me it was the longest most boring 4 days ever. I asked him how many guys were there, he said on Monday there were 7 and yesterday there were 30. Of the 30 I think I saw about 12 to 15 still staying there in uniform. Chris said they got there to late to be processed this week. About 15 guys left yesterday. I am not saying this will happen to all, each is different but for him it went as most posts have said.
He said that they got up and from 0500 until 2000 they sat on the bench most of the time. They would get called in the office for a interview or to fill in a paper and then told to go back to the bench. He did pull fireguard the first night. If you get there after Tuesday you most likely will be there almost 2 weeks but get there on monday and you will most likely get out on friday.
I got to fort sill and called the PCF to see what was going on and the person who answered was very polite and informed me that they were waiting for a paper he had to sign and then Chris would be ready to pick up. He advice I show up in 1 hour which I did.
Now I have read this site and if any of you have anything negative to say, DON"T...The army took a young man who all his life wanted to be in the military and killed that drive and ambition in less than 5 months. According to my son there was nothing but BS... I raised 4 men to be independent thinkers and not put up with BS.. make a decision and stick to it.. don't play games or beat around the bush... from what I have heard seems like our military needs to take a hard look at themselves to see why so many young men, who wanted to fight and defend their country, are leaving , and leaving by going AWOL.
Also for you negative people, my son is enrolled in college again and YES he has federal loans and grants helping him. He has the business plan worked out for the business he wants to open in a few years. He is fine and will be fine.
I hope this helps some of you that are AWOL and PLEASE do turn yourself in and get it behind you. If you are under 180 days or in AIT go to fort sill.
Thank youWhat is the name of your state?
