What is the name of your state? CA

Friend is a Canadian citizen, gay, has a gay partner here in CA and they are married in Canada... he knows that has no meaning here in the US.

He's been told he can stay here for 6 mos... then must leave the country... but for how long before he can re-enter?

Short of finding someone to hire him, what other avenues does he have to stay here? Can hire an attorney, but to what avail? Complete cluelessness on the legality of being a Canadian in the US.

thanks.

As long as his intention is to keep returning to Canada, he will be allowed entry to the US as a visitor. Of course, if he continually tries to enter and stay for 6 months, then depart for Canada and attempt to reenter a week or two later, this is not going to work because he will be presumed to have immigrant intent and understandably one cannot continually "visit" another country where they have no work authorization, etc.

If he has a degree (bachelor's at least, or its equivalent) then he can look for a job in the US and upon receiving a job offer from a US employer, he can qualify for an employment-based visa.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or if I may be of further assistance to you in this matter.

As much time out of the US as in. Canadians enter as "visitors", not "living here half time".
Mr Canadian might want to find some other visa status to be in the US, like student, work etc.
And, look into Canadian migration for the US partner. It will be a long term solution.
