Maybe it's just me then. I really do not like using the word weapon to describe all firearms.
From wordiq:
"A weapon is a tool used to kill or incapacitate a person or animal, or destroy a military target. It may be used to attack and defend, or in some instances just to threaten."

Since guns have been used to kill or incapacitate, they are weapons. As are knives. As are nuclear warheads.

The definition doesn't require that killing be the ONLY use for the item. For example, knives clearly have peaceful uses, but they are weapons.
