Can a landlord get in trouble or face property forfeiture for crimes committed by a renter such as growing marijuana on a property that is rented out if the landlord has no knowledge of the crime being committed? (The landlord in this case has not visited the property once in the 15 years of rental activity and lives about 500 miles away, the renter and landlord are both living in California)

Who are you in this scenario?

If a landlord is unaware of the criminal activity of a tenant, it would be hard for a prosecutor to support any charges against the landlord.

Who looks after the property of this absentee landlord?

I am the renter. I am trusted to look after and take care of the property as I have known the landlord prior to renting the property.

You are the tenant growing the marijuana? Or are you another tenant?

If you are not the tenant growing the plants, did you report the marijuana growing to the landlord or the police?

No, nobody knows about the grow except me, just asking this "what if" scenario.

No, hence the original question...
You as tenant could have issues if your plants are discovered by anyone, including your landlord.

I hope that you are otherwise keeping the rental property well-maintained and that you will do no selling or distributing of the marijuana you are growing.

It is too bad that you are violating the trust that the landlord apparently has placed in you.

In the abstract, virtually anything, including "get[ting] in trouble [and] fac[ing] property forfeiture" are at least theoretically possible (even if unlikely).

Well...you and everyone who has seen your post, which includes site moderators who have the ability to trace your IP address to the general area where you are. It's not terribly smart to admit to criminal activity on a public forum.

Thank you for your input Quincy.
Looking forward to more answers to my original question from others too, even the same answer as they will solidify my beliefs...

Thanks for your input. I'm not too worried about site mods being the police, I am also using a VPN.
