These days courts are accepting emails and text to some extent.

But since she has to do it over, she should do it in writing on paper as the primary method and deliver in accordance with:

Well, that's better it that way than doing it verbally.

Personally, I think that it wound be better to use email/text as an informal heads up, coupled with a written notice. If delivered in person, take a time stamped photo.
