Hi, everyone. I have been married for 21 years, and my wife and I have six children. I would like a divorce, however. I do not believe she is aware of this, but I feel it needs to happen. What I am wondering is whether or not I can actually afford to do this. One of my children will turn 18 next year, but I will still have five minors after that. I do not make a great deal of money. I am sure I could handle the divorce fees, but I am not sure about the child support. I am going to try to schedule a consultation with a lawyer, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any advice for me as well. Thank you for your help.

Stay married and go to marriage counseling.

You can expect 50-55% of your income to go to child support.

Just to further clarify, that is 50-55% of net income. You can also google an online child support calculator for your state and run the numbers. Many states have their official child support calculators available online. (maybe even most of them these days)

You might also keep in mind is that, given the length of the marriage, and depending on your wife's employment history, she might be awarded alimony in addition to child support.

If your wife is in good health, employed, and makes close to what you do, this is less likely.
