Can I be denied acceptance into a college program when they gave me the wrong info

I had actually attended this college 10 years ago and took those same placement tests. On the waiver it said that after reviewing my transcript and based on my academic record I had been waived. Also I had taken a nursing placement test and on the math portion I received a 97. I do very well in math so I have no doubt I would pass this test. I even told them that I would have taken the test months ago if someone had told me. I had told them multiple times, very nicely, that I will take the test. They still will not accept me after I take it though. They said the class is full and they will make no exceptions, and in my case this is an exception. They have made exceptions before though. Last semester a woman took her nursing entrance exam after the deadline, and she went to the school crying, and they let her in. I do still have that waiver. I also have a signed form from a counselor who I had spoken to last summer about what classes I still had to take and what else I had to get done, and she failed to mention to me this math placement test. I went to the dean, but they were no help at all.

I am taking the test November 5. Maybe it would be best for me to go to the board after I take the test, so they see that I can pass it. The orientation for the program is not until December 5 so I would still have time to get into the program. I just don't know why they are being so difficult. I truly believe this is their mistake.

If the class is full, then it is full, it doesn't matter whose fault it is that you didn't complete the requirements on time. They are not required to kick out someone else who DID pass the test on time just to let you in. Enrollment limits for nursing programs are typically absolute hard numbers set based on the number of instructors they have available, set by the agency that accredits the program. I think the best you can hope for is to go onto the waiting list so if someone drops out, you can take their spot.

She might ask to be "the next in line" if someone drops the course this semester. I know the class I teach at my university is always full, then after the first class, someone always drops. Too much work.

Maybe, OP could even ask if she could sit for the first class, until someone drops.

I agree with her, that this wasn't her fault. But she isn't going to force the university to do anything, because as ecmst12 said, the numbers in the program are absolute.

Good luck, and I hope you can find some wiggle room. You might consider another program at another school, if this one is so unwilling to work with you. That's a sign of things to come, in my opinion.

I guess you have to respond by November 1st if you want to do the program for those that were sent acceptance letters. If someone calls and says they have changed their mind and do not wish to join the program, they leave that spot empty. I do not know why they do this. Also, if you do not attend that orientation, they do not allow you to do the program. So I would never be able to attend if someone were to drop out after the start of the program. As far as failing to meet all the requirements, those requirements would have been met if I was never sent that letter stating I did not have to do a specific requirement. This is entirely their fault. I have excellent grades and if this did not happen, I would have been in the program. After talking to the nursing department ladies, they told me I will be a lock-in for September, so I will eventually get in, but that is 8 months later. I guess I will just have to accept what happened and wait till September. I was going to take someones advice about going to the board, but I am afraid if I upset the wrong people I will ruin my chances of getting in. I already contacted the dean, and they were not able to do anything for me.

Well, that totally sucks, and I know how you feel about doing everything right, and then someone else's mistake makes you fall behind. I think you're smart in not going over the head of the dean to the board - that could ultimately hurt you. Is there anything else you can be doing in the mean time? Take more pre-reqs, other tests, work, maybe an internship?

Well I am going to do the placement test next Saturday. The only classes I have left besides the actual nursing classes is an English class and Developmental Psych. So I will do those next semester. So one positive thing that will come out of all this is when I do the program, I will not have to do any of the other classes because those will all be done. I can just focus and spend all my time on the nursing classes.

Let me tell you, nursing is an intense program. You will be SO glad that all your other classes are done once you start, I know I definitely am.
