We hired a company to build an addition onto our house. There were lots of mistakes. They were never even able to fix the leaky plumbing after a month of trying. I hired a plumber and the contractor won't reimburse me so I'm going to file a claim in small claims court. I also had to hire an attorney because the contractor demanded final payment before things were fixed and he didn't provide any invoices - he's supposed to before the final payment can be collected. I wrote him the check under duress - he said I HAD to pay him and I just wanted him to leave my house so I paid him. Later, I came to my senses and stopped payment on the check. Some of the charges on his bill looked suspicious. He refused to even send invoices to the attorney. Will it be possible to recover my expense for the attorney? I only hired him because the contractor was breaking his own contract by insisting on the final payment before he had fulfilled his obligations. I felt that I had no other choice. I want to keep my time in court as short and painless as possible, so if I can't win that, I won't ask for it. Thanks
