By the way, I did return the money. I just think that it was their error not mine. If they had actually verified the funds like they said they did I would not be in this situation. I feel like the teller did a sloppy job. She obviously did not verify the funds even though she told me she did. I feel that it was her responsibility because it is a part of her job. She was the person who called me, in a panic, to return the money. I told her that I no longer had it in cash, but could bring her a check. She flipped out saying it had to be in cash, all 100 dollar bills, because that was the way she gave it to me. I think she was trying to cover her own hind end if you ask me.

My aunt was not the person who I dealt with at the bank. She is not a teller but a loan officer. She was not involved in the transaction at all. So she did not stick her neck out for me in any way. I'm not sure if she was even at that branch that day.

The teller told me that they had verified the funds BEFORE she gave me the money so how can they ask for it back 5 days later?
Ok so she did not stick her neck out but someone did. The bank took a risk on you and lost.

So don't pay the money back, be a dead beat just like the dead beat who gave you the bunk check.

I'm done here, tigi out.

a bank does not secure or lock the funds when asked if any given check will be cleared through an account. The person requesting the information is simply told whether there are funds at that moment to cover the check being asked about. Very often, the funds are in the account when asked about but by the time the check gets to the bank to be cleared, the funds are no longer there. So, if they verified funds, there was no guarantee the funds would still be there when the check was presented for clearing.

So, if your ex had a lot of outstanding checks that cleared that night before your check was presented for clearing, his account could have been depleted and what happened, would happen.

Check - Insufficient Funds

Even though the bank verified that the funds were there, it does take 2-3 days for the check to clear that bank account. It has to be routed through this branch and then to the original bank branch that the check was written on. In the future, it would be in your best interest to cash the check at whatever bank the check is drawn on (name of bank on check). Or, a better option would be to request a money order or wired money from your ex for the child support payment. You may need to contact an attorney or your local court system regarding this bounced check. They should be informed if they threatened legal action against him for non-payment.
