IN theory an IEP can call for parent participation....practice is more fleeting ...but instead of Dad complaining about too much XX at home....if the IEP identifies a problem and sets some guides as to out of school reinforcement of whatever...it might provide some better leverage ..weak as it may be.

OP , from what you post this child has severe problems and is failing to thrive academically ... a 504 is a weak tool, schools hate expensive IEPs .but check into same like tomorrow? And an IEP can also provide for some longer term services.as well as more individualized (expensive ) services ..otherwise the school may rush to " graduate " him at the earliest window,

SOrry Mom does not seem to get it...but deal with the cards you have .

OP who provides what in terms of child support?

You might be smart to get some legal advice BEFORE child gets to 18 about continued CS under N J rules until such time as condition is abated to point child can be self supporting ...neither parent should be able to just drop child into cracks in the floor for social services to pick up.....but address it sooner rather than later.

And also get legal advice to discuss a supplemental needs trust so that any inheritance he might receive is invested in the best possible manner.

A child with as severe problems as you report is likely to have problems as an adult.

I would also suggest you reevaluate the professionals treating him. It takes effort to find a group of therapists and physicians that "click". It is amazing the difference an individual can make in the response of the patient/client.
