The new trend is to hold you for a drug sniffing dog. If the dog even hits on drug residue, on money in the car, they have probable cause to search.

Did you mean "or" money in the car? If so then its not legal to have money in the car as opposed to on your person?
I believe he was inferring that a dog run around the outside of the car could somehow hit on drug residue on cash inside the vehicle.

Not sure that this could happen, as that would be a dog with a far more sensitive sniffer than most, but, okay ....

Many states are now "intercepting" vehicles transporting cash or drugs. Tennessee has drawn fire for policing south bound traffic and confiscating cash at a significantly higher rate than they police north bound and confiscate drugs. A significant portion of the currency in the US has drug residue on it. All the dog needs to do is hit, for probable cause to search the vehicle.
